Chapters Transcript PureWick® Male Urinary incontinence is managed with various options, none of which perfectly solve the problem, and each with unique drawbacks. Some common issues associated with urinary incontinence management include urinary tract infections, skin breakdown, and increased risk of injury due to falls. The Purewick system is an innovative and non-invasive option to managing urinary incontinence at home. It is designed to wick away voided urine, which is pulled away by the Purewick urine collection system into a collection canister. The Purewick male external catheter is designed to help keep skin dry, and the adhesive is designed with a full seal to minimize leakage. It's extremely important for the product to be set up and placed properly to ensure the best results. First, make sure you have all the contents before placing or replacing the Purewick male external catheter. You'll need Purewick urine collection system base with or without battery, AC power cord, collector tubing with elbow connector. And pump tubing, 2000 mL collection canister with lid, Purewick male external catheter. Place the Purewick urine collection system next to the bed or chair where it will be used. It must be close enough for the collector tubing with elbow connector to easily reach the user, and should be placed on a stable and even surface. The Purewick urine collection system should be stationary while in use. The device is not designed to be used while in transport. Plug the Purewick urine collection system power cord into device outlet and into an AC power outlet. Make sure the power switch is turned off before connecting the power cord. Next, place the canister in the Purewick urine collection system base and press down firmly on the lid, making sure the lid is sealed. If using the privacy cover, slip the cover onto the canister prior to placing canister into the base. Attach the pump tubing to the Purewick urine collection system connector port and the connector port on the collection canister lid. Attach the elbow connector to the collector tubing and attach the collector tubing to the connector port on the collection canister lid. It is important that the port connections be connected correctly and securely for proper operation of the Purewick urine collection system. Turn on the Purewick urine collection system by pressing the on-off switch. The Purewick urine collection system is working when the switch lights up green, and the device makes a soft humming sound. Connect the other end of the collector tubing securely to the Purewick male external catheter. The system is now ready for use. Prior to placing the Purewick male external catheter, it's important to wash your hands thoroughly. If you are placing the device on another person, wear gloves. Before placing the Purewick male external catheter, trim or clip the pubic hair to ensure the product securely adheres to the skin. Check the skin, and do not use the device if there is irritation or breakdown. Once the skin has been assessed, clean the area with soap and water, and ensure the skin is dry before positioning the device. Position the device so that the drainage fitting is towards the feet of the user. Slide the opening of the device over the penis until close to the skin, about the base of the penis. Center the penis within the opening and ensure the scrotum is not placed inside the device. Remove the bottom adhesive peel off and press the device against the skin below the base of the penis. Repeat these steps for the top adhesive peel off. Ensure the device has fully adhered around the base of the penis by pressing down. To remove the Purewick male external catheter, gently lift the top edge of the adhesive base off the skin. In a slow downward peeling motion, remove the device. If necessary, use a warm, wet cloth to help loosen the adhesive. To avoid potential skin injury, never pull the device directly away from the user. Always peel in the direction from head to foot. The Purewick male external catheter should be discarded and replaced at least every 24 hours, or sooner if soiled with feces, blood, or semen. When the canister is ready to be emptied, disconnect the Purewick male external catheter from the Purewick urine collection system. Although the canister can hold up to 2000 mL, to prevent overflow, empty urine from the collection canister before volume reaches 1800 mL. Keep the Purewick urine collection system on to make sure all urine has been drawn out of the collector tubing and into the collection canister. Turn off the system, disconnect. The AC power cord from the power outlet and the device, and disconnect the collector tubing and pump tubing from the canister. Lift collection canister from the system and take to an area appropriate for disposal, like a bathroom. Carefully remove the lid and dispose of urine in a proper receptacle, like a toilet. Clean collector tubing, pump tubing, canister, Purewick urine collection system, and power cord according to provided cleaning instructions. Created by
