Chapters Transcript PureWick™ Female External Catheter Catheter associated urinary tract infections, also known as caudies, are associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and cost. The primary risk factor for development of caudy is duration of catheterization. Several catheter care practices are universally recommended to prevent or at least delay the onset of caudy. Among them, remove the catheter as soon as no. longer needed. One important strategy to reduce Foley catheter usage and duration of catheterization is the use of Foley catheter alternatives such as intermittent catheterization, urinals, absorbent pads, diapers, and external catheters for men. Another important risk factor for caudy is female gender. A study found that females are at a higher risk for developing caudy. Due to being more likely to have an indwelling Foley catheter, for decades, male external catheters or condom catheters have provided a non-invasive option for urine drainage in men. Until now, no such external catheter existed for women, resulting in a different standard of care for male and female patients. The Purwig female external catheter was the first product to address this discrepancy.
