The primary risk factor for development of cay is duration of catheterization. Preventative measures directed at limiting placement and ensuring early removal of urinary catheters significantly reduce cotty rates. One important strategy to reduce Foley catheter usage and duration of catheterization is the use of Foley catheter alternatives such as intermittent catheterization, urinals, absorbent pads, diapers, and external catheters for men. Another important risk factor for cotty is female gender. Females are at a higher risk for developing a cotty and are more likely to have an indwelling Foley catheter. For decades, male external catheters or condom catheters have provided a noninvasive option for urine drainage in men. Until now, no such external catheter existed for women, resulting in a different standard of care for male and female patients. The PureWick female external catheter is the first product to address this discrepancy. The PureWick female external catheter allows for simple non-invasive urine output management. Using low pressure wall suction, the PureWick female external catheter wicks urine away from the patient and into a designated collection canister. With the PureWick female external catheter, you have a noninvasive option for managing female urinary incontinence through appropriate use of the PureWick female external catheter, you can play a key role in helping reduce unnecessary Foley catheter usage. Prior to starting the procedure, obtain all of your necessary supplies, clean gloves, suction canister and standard suction tubing, and the Purewick female external catheter. Explain the procedure to the patient. Wash hands and don clean gloves. Connect the canister to wall suction and set to the recommended 40 millimeter mercury continuous suction. If using the dry dock vacuum station, connect the canister to the unit and turn the unit on. Please consult the dry dock vacuum station user guide for further information. Verify wall suction function by covering the open end of the suction tubing with one hand and observing the pressure dial. If the pressure does not increase when the line is covered, verify that the tubing is secured, connected, and not kinked. Using standard suction tubing, connect the purewick female external catheter to the collection canister. Write the current date and time on the supplied duration label to track the length of use. Perform perineal care using included wipes and assess skin integrity. Document per hospital protocol. Separate legs, gluteus muscles, and labia. Palpate pubic bone as an anatomical marker. With the soft gauze side facing the patient, align the distal end of the pure wick female external catheter at the gluteal cleft. Gently tuck the soft gauze side between the separated gluteus and labia. Ensure that the top of the gauze is aligned with the pubic bone. Slowly place the legs back together once the purewick female external catheter is positioned. In most cases, the patient's anatomy will hold the product in place. If the patient's condition allows and at the discretion of the clinician, the patient can be positioned on her back, side, frog-legged, or in the lithotomy position prior to device placement. To remove the Purwic female external catheter, fully separate the legs, gluteus, and labia. To avoid potential skin injury upon removal, gently pull the Purewic female external catheter directly outward. Ensure suction is maintained while removing the Purewick female external catheter. After use this product may be a potential biohazard. Dispose of in accordance with applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations. Replace the Purew female external catheter at least every 8 to 12 hours or if soiled with feces or blood. Always assess skin for compromise and perform perineal care prior to placement of a new Purewick female external catheter. Created by
